Description

Japanese Sosaku Wooden Kokeshi Doll Signed "Moon Shadow" by master craftsman Suigai Sato. She is named Semishigure, which translates from the Japanese as "cicadas in chorus." This particular doll is a classic, having been produced albeit in small numbers over many years and in two sizes; this is a large size and is no longer available.

Sato Suigai, born in 1920 in Yoshioka, started Kokeshi making in 1949. Suigai is a pseudonym taken from the name of his teacher, Mr. Suiun Komuro, under whom he studied Japanese painting. Born in Gunma Prefecture of Japan, he began making Kokeshi dolls in 1949. He received numerous awards, including the prestigious Prime Ministers Award in 1966. Semishigure is an unusual and relatively complex design and would fit into any decor. She is beautifully hand-painted in deep blue, in very good condition, some colors faded and scratched, and in very good condition for her age.
