Japanese Otafuku「お多福」Geisha tsuzumi (鼓) hand drum Kimono Doll 16.5” c1950 A942

A beautiful Japanese Otafuku geisha doll was handmade in Japan in the mid-20th century, around the 1950s. She is styled in a graceful standing pose, dressed in a richly decorated kimono and mounted on a black lacquered wood stand. Her finely detailed face is delicately hand-painted with a serene expression, and her black hair is traditionally coiffed with colorful kanzashi ornaments featuring floral elements and dangling accents.

The kimono is crafted in vibrant red with floral patterns and contrasting panels, complemented by a structured obi at the back with classic geometric detailing. The textile layering and color balance reflect post-war Japanese export artistry. In her hand, she holds a traditional fan, representing classical dance performance, consistent with Oyama-style display dolls. A wooden plaque inscribed「お多福」(Otafuku) accompanies the piece, identifying the character and adding cultural significance.

Interestingly, this type of decorative geisha doll has been hand-crafted in Japan since the 1920s and became especially popular during the 1940s–1960s export period. These dolls often represent stylized figures from traditional culture, theater, or symbolic characters, and were made for both domestic appreciation and international collectors.

She stands 16.5" tall (with 1/2" platform), and the platform measures 8.5" x 6.5". Considering her age, she is in excellent vintage condition with minor, age-appropriate wear to the fabric and accessories from display over time.
