Kokeshi by Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925-2018) Titled あじさい Ajisai Hydrangea A1198

Beautiful vintage Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi by renowned artist Sansaku Sekiguchi (関口三作, 1925–2018), titled “あじさい — Ajisai — Hydrangea.”

This distinctive design features a serene young girl with closed eyes, a brilliant red kimono, deep purple hair, and delicately clasped hands. Her rounded headpiece is decorated with an exceptionally colorful geometric pattern in turquoise, yellow, gold, red, and blue, creating a striking mosaic-like effect.

Sekiguchi was one of the most celebrated artists of the modern Creative Kokeshi movement and received numerous major awards during his career. This model is documented under the title “Ajisai,” meaning Hydrangea.

Signed with the artist’s red seal on the underside.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition with exceptionally bright and well-preserved colors. No notable discoloration to the body. Minor age-related discoloration is present on the underside of the base only. Please see photos.
