Description

This is a Showa-period incense burner from Takaoka, a city renowned for its metalworking tradition since 1611, when the second lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshinaga, established foundries there to promote the prosperity of the castle town. Over time, Takaoka copperware developed into a sophisticated craft, blending casting and metal carving techniques, and gained international recognition at exhibitions such as the Paris Exposition of the late 19th century.

This incense burner is a three-legged censer with a pierced lid decorated with openwork autumn grasses. The body features fine relief work, and the base bears the engraved signature "Tanyei 鍛栄." The accompanying original wooden storage box is signed and sealed by the artist.

The burner is in excellent condition; it is always kept in the box.
